Health Services Information

PARENT INFORMATION FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE:


The goal of our Health Services is to promote optimal health of students, provide a safe environment, maintain positive attitudes and teach safe health practices. As always, all medical information is kept confidential. We want our students to be happy and healthy to learn in school.

THE FOLLOWING GENERAL INFORMATION MAY ASSIST YOU AS PARENTS:

- ABSENCES: When your child is sick and needs to stay home call the Attendance Office at 201- 295-2858.

- TARDINESS/LATE: Bring your child to the main office for a late pass.

- MEDICAL TIPS: Keep a sick child home for fever over 100.0, diarrhea, vomiting, flu, pink eye (conjunctivitis), rashes of unknown origin, or if your child’s doctor instructs you to. If your child has a cast, crutches or will need the elevator please see the nurse before he/she comes to school. A note from the doctor will be required.

- HOME INSTRUCTION: Any student who will be absent for longer then 2 weeks may require a home tutor. This will require a doctor’s note requesting tutor. Please see the nurse as soon as possible if tutor needed.

- CLASS PARTIES: Some students in your child’s class may have food allergies. Please avoid nuts and peanuts when sending in treats when possible. Contact your child’s teacher if needed prior sending in treats if you are unsure.

- PEDICULOSIS (HEAD LICE) SCREENINGS: Screening is conducted randomly and when needed by the nurse throughout the school year. AS per the recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics: Students will be sent home for treatment and can return to school following. The nurse will check the rest of the class. The nurse will recheck your child for a few weeks to check the progress. The nurse and your doctor can help if needed.

THE FOLLOWING ARE ANNUAL HEALTH SCREENING PROGRAMS (State of NJ):


Height/Weight all students

Vision Screening grades K, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10

Audiological (Hearing) grades K, 1, 2, 3 7, 11

- MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL: If your child will need medication during the school day/year please see the nurse. Written permission from the doctor and parent should be returned to the nurse and all medication must be in the pharmacy container properly labeled. No morning or late day medications will be given unless there is an emergency need. Only medications required for life threatening emergencies will be given on a field trip.

- ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAMS: Physicals are recommended yearly. Your nurse will send home a form at the end of each school year. If your doctor completes a physical form, please return it to your nurse.

WHEN WILL THE SCHOOL NURSE CALL/OR WRITE ME A NOTE IF MY CHILD VISITS HER OFFICE:


Illness with fever, active repeat vomiting, diarrhea.
Head wounds or severe hit to head.
Severe wounds especially when may require sutures.
Suspected broken bones/fractures “student states they can’t walk”.
Fainting, disorientation.
Suspected contagious illness.
 
Any other student complaints or issues that the nurse feels she needs to report to you as needed.
